What’s In Season In November

By Pat Elk · On 1 November 2013

2013 has gone by so quickly! It’s been such a busy year, filled with so many exciting things. New recipes to try, exploring new-found farms for fresh foods that are grown and produced without chemicals, tasting great fare at different markets, and learning all the time. So with December now just weeks away, what are you planning or preparing for the Christmas holidays? Have you made your Christmas cake yet?

All our summer fruits are just coming into season, which makes it the perfect time to kick things into high gear and start preparing. How about making some mulberry jam – just picture that rich, deep purple colour – or some apricots in syrup, or cherries in brandy? Better still, you could plan a trip to Ficksburg to go pick your own cherries. Whatever you plan to do, the weather’s on your side right now so you’re sure to have fun, and have a fuller pantry to show for it!

Here are this month’s gifts from Mother Nature. Enjoy:

Vegetables:
Asparagus (green and White), aubergine, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, globe artichokes, onions, potatoes, pumpkin, radishes, spinach, sweet potatoes and waterblommetjies

Fruit:
Apricots, cherries, figs, kiwi fruit, lemons melons, mulberries, plums, pineapples, spanspek, strawberries and watermelon

Herbs:
Basil, bay leaves, dill, fennel, marjoram, mint, oreganum, rosemary, sage and thyme
