Summer is here at last and with summer comes all my favourite fruits!
Watermelon, so juicy and sweet. I remember us going on picnics in the Drakensberg and we’d put the watermelon in the clear river water where it would become icy cold. After lunch, we’d each be given a big slice of crispy watermelon, which had been cut and snapped off with glee. I remember so well the icy cold sweetness of the fruit, with the juice running down my chin and arms. That right there was simple heaven. I still get that feeling today when eating watermelon.
Then there are the other icons of summer waiting to join your fridge: mangoes and litchis, plums and nectarines, yumminess all round. So many things to do and make from chutneys to tarts and jam of course – best I go and get busy.
